FIS-111: Classical Electrodynamics III

Syllabus (Particle and Field Physics): Special Theory of Relativity; Relativistic Dynamics of Particles and Electromagnetic Fields; Relativistic Covariance; Collisions and Energy Losses; Relativistic Radiative Energy Loss; Shielding Effects; Cherenkov Radiation; Radiation from Accelerated Charges; Transition Radiation; Bremsstrahlung.

Schedule and Room:

Tue and Thu: 16:00 - 18:00;
S-306-3, Bloco A, Campus Santo André.

Bibliography:

1) Classical Eletrodynamics, J. D. Jackson, 3rd Ed., John Wiley and Sons (1998);
2) The Classical Theory of Fields, L. Landau & E.M. Lifshitz, Ed. Addison-Wesley (1971);
3) Princípios de Eletrodinâmica Clássica, J. Frenkel, EDUSP (1996).

Assessment:

Exercise lists:
- 3 exercises from Jackson, chosen by the student (~ 1 for each class), to be submitted by the end of each chapter;
- 1 exercise from each list solved and defended in class (~ without repeating).

Grades:

The average will be calculated by:
M = (L1 + L2+ L3+ L4)/4,
where Li is the list from chapter i, validated by the defense.

Final grades will be submitted according to:
A, 10 ≥ M ≥ 9.0
B, 9.0 > M ≥ 7.0
C, 7.0 > M ≥ 5.0
D, 5.0 > M ≥ 4.0
F, 4.0 > M ≥ 0.0

Next classes:
Sept.29) Relativistic Covariance.
Oct.01) Invariance of electric charge.
